HGCI Teacher
Workshop on Marine Education and Careers for Leeward O'ahu Teachers
June 23, June
25, & August 23, 2014
We had a great time getting immersed in
things marine with a fun group of teachers during our recent Hawaiʻi Green
Collar Institute teacher workshop addressing marine conservation, education,
and careers. One of the eye-opening site visits was to the new NOAA Inouye
Regional Center on Ford Island. Mahalo to Patty Miller of NOAA for coordinating
our visit. We also had a great time learning about limu (seaweed) and how to
make beautiful pressed specimens, under the guidance of Uncle Henry Chang Wo
and Wally Ito. We also learned about fishes, spawning, and the art of gyotaku
(fish printing) by Matt Ramsey and Eva Schemmel. Teachers learned that these
activities can be the foundation upon which to develop lessons in STEAM
(science, technology, engineering, art, and math). In August, we will reconnect
with these teachers to share lesson plans that they have developed on marine
conservation and careers.
